HISTORY
(FOR EDUCATIONAL PURPOSES ONLY)

In the 1960s the Sonnabend family saw a need for hotels to serve the business traveler and vacationing families on a budget.
And so was born Charterhouse Hotels.
By the mid-1970s there were 30 Charterhouse Hotels in New England, including the Portland Charterhouse pictured below.

In front of the hotel was the flagship restaurant of the venerable Valle's Steak House chain as seen in this 1960s print advertisement.

The Sonnabends later decided to focus on their upscale Sonesta hotels and sold off Charterhouse to various independent hoteliers.
The Portland Charterhouse was renamed Cross Roads Motor Inn in the late 1970s (its sign seen in the reflection on Valle's window.)

The Charterhouse and Valle's evolved over the years to reflect the ever-changing preferences of the lodging and dining public.
The concrete swimming pool overlooking the turnpike gave way to green space.
Steaks gave way to sushi.
The hotel is now called Inn at Portland, and the restaurant is now called Kon Asian Bistro.
The hotel and restaurant, then as now, are separately owned and operated.
